Video: Fairphone – he world’s first sustainable, modular Android smartphone
I'm Olivier Hebert. I'm the Chief Technology Officer here at Fairphone. We are a social enterprise but also a mobile product company. Since we started back in 2013, we've grown from a team of three I think in the beginning, up to team of around 50 right now. Fairphone 2 we've created is the first modular device brought to the market. The appearance of Android in the market is basically given the world a full-featured flexible operating system on a very open model. Using Android from the start enabled us to really focus on some other things and getting basically a very good operating system without having to invest a lot of resources and time and money while remaining with the openness of Android we can create different flavors of devices to cater for specific customers and specific verticals basically.
So we're looking also to differentiate on those lines. Android enables us to basically do that. We aim to produce between 120 and 200,000 units per year over the next couple of years. So what does Android mean to us? It's pretty much an essential part of a modern smartphone nowadays..
